A panel featuring Nazeeha Saeed, Maia Nukri Tabidze, Madhura Chakraborty, Ebeneezer Peegah, and Whitney Pfeifer will reflect on the outcome of the impact of global elections on LGBTIQ rights, focusing on participation, representation, and the rise of anti-rights populism.
In 2024, nearly fifty percent of the global population in over 64 countries will go to elections. This is an unprecedented year of global elections since the inception of electoral democracy. But what do elections mean for LGBTIQ people during an unprecedented turn towards authoritarianism and anti-rights populism? This panel will feature panelists from Asia, Europe, and Africa discussing how LGBTIQ people are participating, being barred from, and engaging with electoral democracies in this year of elections. The panelists will critically examine electoral democracy and focus on particular elections, anti-rights, gender-critical campaigns, and actors shaping elections in their contexts.
