Kumina is a traditional Afro-Jamaican folk form rooted in the practices of the Bantu people, particularly from the Congo region of Africa. It is both a spiritual and cultural expression that blends drumming, singing, dancing, and rituals. Kumina is often associated with ceremonies such as wakes, funerals, and thanksgiving events and serves as a way to communicate with ancestors and invoke spirits.
The dance involves intricate, rhythmic footwork and movements of the hips and torso, often performed in a circular formation. It is accompanied by vibrant drumming patterns on instruments like the “kbandu” and “playing cast” drums, along with call-and-response singing in African-based languages. The practice holds strong ties to African retention and is a vital part of Jamaica’s cultural heritage.
Today, Kumina has evolved into a modern representation seen in theatrical performances, contemporary choreography, and national celebrations like the Jamaica Festival. While retaining its spiritual essence, it has also become a symbol of cultural pride and African identity in Jamaica.
