DIOCESE TO OPEN CAUSE FOR BEATIFICATION OF SR. CLARE CROCKETT, ACTRESS TURNED RELIGIOUS SISTER

St. Columba’s Church in Derry, Northern Ireland, has announced that the Cause for Beatification of Sr. Clare Crockett, an Irish religious sister who died during the earthquake in Ecuador on April 16, 2016, will be officially opened on January 12, 2025, in Spain.
Born in Derry, Sr. Clare grew up in a politically divided environment. Although she received all the sacraments of initiation and studied in Catholic schools, she initially knew little about her faith. At 14, an acting agency noticed her talent, and by 15, she landed her first acting job. Sr. Clare later shared in her vocation story that she began to feel an emptiness within herself at the age of 16.
Her life took a transformative turn when she was invited on a “Holy Week Encounter” pilgrimage to Spain. Clare, who had developed habits of drinking and smoking, was surprised to find that this trip was, in fact, a religious pilgrimage rather than a party trip. During the pilgrimage, she met Fr. Rafael Alonso, the founder of the Home of the Mother community. On Good Friday, as she went to kiss the crucified Christ, she experienced a profound realization: her sins had contributed to Christ’s suffering on the cross. She later expressed to Fr. Alonso her desire to become a nun.Fr. Alonso invited her to World Youth Day the following year, and despite doubts from other sisters, Clare returned as promised for World Youth Day in Rome in 2000.
Although she felt called to religious life, she initially struggled to say “yes” fully, as she also dreamed of fame. Her desire for fame clashed with her call to serve God. Ultimately, with grace, she renounced worldly pursuits and embraced her faith.
On August 11, 2001, at 18, she entered the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother, making her perpetual vows on September 8, 2010. [Her fellow sisters remember her as a vibrant and committed soul, devoted to the Eucharist and inspiring others to deepen their love for Christ. As a Servant Sister, she served in Spain, the United States, and Ecuador.
In 2014, Sr. Clare began what would be her final mission in Playa Prieta, Ecuador. [16] By day, she taught at the Holy Family Educational Center, a school for underprivileged children run by the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother. In the evenings, she assisted at the parish and [20] visited impoverished families in rural areas. A year into her mission in Playa Prieta, a severe flood struck just before the school year was set to start. Sr. Clare and her fellow sisters worked tirelessly for over a week to restore the school.
On April 16, 2016, after cleaning the school, Sr. Clare and five young aspirants retired to the first floor. Earlier that day, they had discussed death over lunch, with Sr. Clare confidently saying, “Why should I be afraid of death, if I am going to go with the One I have longed to be with my whole life?” She was giving the girls guitar lessons when, at 6:58 p.m., a powerful earthquake struck, taking the lives of Sr. Clare and the five young girls.
Her life and legacy have had a profound impact worldwide. In 2018, a documentary about her life, All or Nothing, was released. In 2023, Sr. Kristen Gardner was appointed postulator for Sr. Clare’s Cause for Beatification. According to an announcement on the Facebook page of St. Columba’s Church, Sr. Clare will be declared Servant of God in a ceremony at the Alcalá de Henares Cathedral in Madrid, Spain, [1] where her community is headquartered and where she spent much of her religious life.
