壮志凌霄, Ambitions to the Sky. Now this is what I personally believe to be the best of all the Republic of China (Taiwan) military songs. Now, China has a rich history of literature and music, but not as much when it comes to military march, which by and large is a mostly Western thing. And this is a main reason why most Chinese military marches from the 20th century feels...not right, when compared to those from Japan, which was more Westernized. However, this one, Ambitions to the Sky, this is an exception. The lyrics are Chinese--in the sense that it represents Chinese culture (instead of the socialist culture prevalent in communist mainland songs). The music, composed by Liu Xue'an (刘雪庵), is also very pleasantly Westernized, giving the song the pompous beat a military march should have.

The song was written in 1946, during the brief peace in China between WWII and the Civil War. Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang Military Affairs Commission Aviation Commission (国民政府军事委员会航空委员会) was reorganized as the Air Force Command Headquarters (空军总司令部) for China's small but battle-hardened air force. The newly established HQ asked the public for songs for the new Republic of China Air Force (reorganized from the National Revolutionary Army Air Force). The result was five separate sets of lyrics (Ambitions to the Sky was one of them, obviously) and the talented musician Liu Xue'an composed for all five.

Although according to my Taiwanese friend, this song is one of the more popular and the most often sung of all the other ROCAF songs.
