Enjoy a peaceful rainy day walk through Zentsuji Temple, one of the most important temples in Japan’s Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Located in Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, this historic site was founded in 807 AD by Kukai (Kobo Daishi), the revered monk who also built Toji Temple in Kyoto and Kongobuji Temple on Mt. Koyasan.

Zentsuji Temple is the birthplace of Kukai, one of the most influential figures in Japanese Buddhism. After studying in Chang’an, China, he returned to Japan and left a lasting legacy through the spread of Shingon Buddhism.

The temple grounds feature a striking five-story wooden pagoda, standing 45 meters tall — the third tallest in Japan after Toji Temple in Kyoto and Kofukuji Temple in Nara. While not a National Treasure, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
