Quake II: Citadel

Quake II was developed by ID Software and published by Activision. The author of the custom level I'm playing is Andrea Rosa. I own nothing in this video.

Citadel is one of the largest and most ambitious custom single player projects for Quake II that it might as well be an expansion pack. Boasting nine levels in total, Citadel will keep you entertained for a long time. It's a map pack that has all the strengths of a fantastic Quake II experience - splendid architecture, exciting mission objectives, varied and beautiful environments, and a tough challenge all the way through.

The enjoyment you'll get out of playing Citadel is even further increased by the fact that the map pack contains most of the weapons, items and enemies from the mission packs of The Reckoning, Ground Zero and Zaero, adding some diversity to the gameplay. It also makes use of the Lazarus code, which makes enemy behavior much more unpredictable.

The history of Citadel is long. The 1.0 version of the map pack was first released in May 2007, but it was four levels short of its current state. Version 2.0 (which adds External Base and the secret level Ore Deposit) was released two years later in May 2009 and it's the version that I first got to play. Version 3.0 was released merely yesterday and it adds Switchyard and Data Center, along with an extended version of External Base and other gameplay improvements. It's this version that I'm playing through in this video.

Citadel definitely gets a recommendation from me. It's beautiful to look at, it's fun to play through, and its impressive length will keep you immersed in its world for a long time.
