*Exploring Wildlife Conservation in Punjab, Pakistan: Insights from the Wildlife Director*
In our latest podcast episode, we had the honor of hosting the Wildlife Director of Punjab, Pakistan. He shared remarkable insights into how the wildlife department operates and the critical conservation efforts underway in the region. Here are the key highlights from our engaging discussion:
*How the Wildlife Department Works*
The Wildlife Director explained the structure of the department, starting from field officers responsible for implementing laws, to higher-level authorities such as Assistant Directors, Deputy Directors, Directors, and ultimately the Director General. This organized hierarchy ensures that wildlife laws are enforced and conservation programs are implemented effectively.
*In-Situ and Ex-Situ Conservation*
He introduced two important conservation methods:
**In-situ conservation**, which focuses on protecting species in their natural habitats.
**Ex-situ conservation**, which involves protecting species outside their natural habitats, such as in wildlife sanctuaries or breeding centers.
*Rare and Native Species in Pakistan*
Pakistan is home to unique wildlife, including the exclusive Punjabi Urial, which is not found anywhere else in the world. The Indus River Dolphin is another incredible species native to the region. These animals play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem’s balance.
However, many species are under threat due to urbanization, which is encroaching on their habitats. The Wildlife Director emphasized the urgent need to address this issue and create sustainable living environments for both humans and animals.
*Human-Wildlife Interaction and Rescue Efforts*
A significant concern discussed was the frequent killing of animals like snakes, scorpions, and other creatures that enter human dwellings. The Wildlife Director urged people to avoid harming these animals. Instead, he advised contacting the wildlife department’s helpline to call the field force, which is trained to safely rescue and relocate animals.
*Controlled Hunting and Conservation Funding*
Another fascinating topic was the legal hunting of certain species, such as the Markhor, Pakistan’s national animal. Wealthy international hunters, particularly from the United States, pay significant amounts to hunt Markhor under strict government regulations. These funds are used to support conservation programs and local communities, demonstrating a balanced approach to wildlife management.
*Education and Awareness*
The Wildlife Director’s own journey is inspiring. Hailing from a small town, Kasur, he pursued higher education in Lahore, completing his master’s degree at Government College Lahore. His story highlights the importance of education and awareness in driving positive change in wildlife conservation.
*Protecting Wildlife for Future Generations*
We concluded the discussion with a powerful message: “Wildlife should be protected, and we must take care of it because God created all living beings to coexist on this planet. Every species has a right to live.”
*Key Takeaways*
Call the wildlife helpline instead of harming animals that enter your home.
Support conservation by understanding the role of controlled hunting programs.
Raise awareness about the importance of protecting species like the Punjabi Urial and Indus River Dolphin.
Urbanization’s impact on wildlife must be mitigated to preserve biodiversity.
Wildlife conservation is a shared responsibility. Let’s work together to protect our natural heritage for generations to come.
