Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses.
The sinuses are empty spaces in the skull, with four pairs (eight total) above, between, behind, and under the eyes.
Symptoms of Sinusitis
Nasal discharge (green or yellow)
Postnasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat)
Facial pain or pressure
Blocked or runny nose
Sore throat
Cough
Bad breath
Fever
Headaches
Reduced sense of smell and taste
Tenderness and swelling around the eyes, nose, cheeks, and forehead
Toothache
Causes and Risk Factors of Sinusitis
Viral infections
Bacterial infections
Fungal infections and molds
Allergies and asthma
Pollutants in the air (chemicals or other irritants)
Previous respiratory tract infection (e.g., cold)
Nasal polyps (small benign growths in the nasal passage)
Seasonal allergies
Sensitivity to substances (dust, pollen, animal hair)

Deviated septum (bone and cartilage dividing the nose)
Types of Sinusitis
Acute Sinusitis (temporary, lasts up to 4 weeks)
Chronic Sinusitis (long-term, lasts more than 12 weeks)
Subacute Sinusitis (falls between acute and chronic, lasts more than 4 weeks but less than 12 weeks)
Recurrent Sinusitis (acute sinusitis that occurs four or more times per year)
Fungal Sinusitis (caused by an allergic reaction to fungi in the nose)
