This episode from Peshawar's history highlights the darker side of Sikh rule and challenges the idealized portrayal of Ranjit Singh (رنجیت سنگھ) as a secular and religiously tolerant ruler. Sikh Shahi, or Sikh rule, was associated with cruelty, misrule, injustice, and anarchy. Chapli Kabab (چپلی کباب), a favorite traditional dish of the Peshawar city (پشاور) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was banned in the 1830s by Ranjit Singh. An episode from the history of Pashtuns (پشتون).
