Trying New Haven's BEST RATED Pizza! Is Zuppardi's Worth the Hype?

New Haven pizza is nationally famous, nay rather it is world famous! It is known for being thin, not too different from New York style pizza in many ways, and also for a combination of chewiness and crunchiness. Perhaps most of all, notably by Frank Pepe's and Sally's Apizza, New Haven pizza is known for its characteristic char, from the iconic New Haven coal-fired pizza ovens. That is quite special as coal-fired pizza ovens have been regulated into almost oblivion, with them becoming increasingly more rare. There's just way too much red tape these days so most places, particularly new pizzerias that were not grandfathered in, don't even bother and just use gas and electric ovens.

Still, you can't replicate that coal-fired pizza taste in my opinion! That's why interestingly I was surprised to see that New Haven's highest rated pizzeria was a place that uses a gas oven and not a coal oven. Zuppardi's Apizza has the highest Google rating, even more so than Pepe's in New Haven, though Zuppardi's is in West Haven technically. But you would think that the highest rated place would be a coal-fired place right? Wrong! It's Zuppardi's using a more modern gas powered oven. Is it worth the hype?
