Why Nordic Countries All Bought the Same Korean Howitzer
Before Poland's $22 billion deal, three Nordic countries quietly bought 136 Korean K9 howitzers. Finland, Norway, and Estonia replaced their old Soviet and NATO artillery with South Korean systems between 2017-2018—and nobody noticed.
The numbers: Finland 48 K9 (€146M, 2017), Norway 24 K9 + 6 K10 ($215M, 2017), Estonia 12 K9 (€46M, 2018). By 2025, they expanded to 136 total systems. Then Poland ordered 672 K9 howitzers worth billions.
The K9 Thunder: 155mm/52 caliber, 40km range, 6 rounds/min, costs $3.5M vs $6-8M for European competitors. South Korea now controls 50%+ of the global artillery market with 1,800+ units delivered worldwide.
