503-HP 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S Coming to U.S. in SUV Form

Mercedes-AMG will now offer the most powerful GLC63 S model in both SUV and coupe body styles.

It has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine with 503 horsepower and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive.

No pricing is available yet but AMG says U.S. deliveries will start in the fourth quarter of 2021.

If you don't want to compromise cargo space in your 503-horsepower AMG SUV, you're in luck. Mercedes has decided to offer the AMG GLC63's most powerful S derivative in both SUV and "coupe" body styles in the U.S. for 2022; the S was previously offered only in the swoopier coupe model that has less space in back.

It may share a platform with the Benz-branded model, but the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLC-class is a beast in its own right, with a trio of powerful engine choices. The entry-level GLC43 comes with a 385-hp twin-turbo V-6, but those who want even more power can opt for the GLC63 or GLC63 S, both of which are powered by a twin-turbo V-8 with either 469 or 503 horsepower. To match its blistering acceleration performance, the GLC-class delivers sharp handling, but the compromise is a ride that's nowhere near as smooth as the regular GLC300 offers. But the cabin is just as refined, and a host of modern infotainment and comfort features will make luxury buyers feel right at home. The GLC-class has impressed us so much that we gave it an Editors' Choice award for 2022.

What's New for 2022?

The GLC63 S model joins the lineup for 2022. The GLC63 S brings the 503-hp version of the twin-turbo V-8, previously reserved only for the GLC Coupe, to the more practical squareback body style this year. However, Mercedes-AMG has also told Car and Driver that certain 2022 models normally offered with V-8 engines will not be available. The GLC63 and GLC63 S models may be impacted by this change to the lineup, but representatives from Mercedes-AMG would not comment or confirm that information by press time.
Given the existing price differential between the GLC63 and GLC63 S coupe, we anticipate the GLC63 S SUV to start around $82,000.

Non-S GLC63 models continue on with a less powerful, 469-hp version of the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 found in the S cars. Along with the additional power, the S model also benefits from a more sophisticated 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and a higher top speed governor of 174 mph, compared with 155 mph. A 2018 GLC63 S coupe model was one of the quickest SUVs we've ever tested, with a 60 mph acceleration time of 3.2 seconds.

Given the existing price differential between the GLC63 and GLC63 S coupe, we anticipate the GLC63 S SUV to start around $82,000.
