Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) Muscle
One of the largest & most superficial cervical muscles.
Origin:
Sternal Branch = Manubrium.
Clavicular Branch = Medial portion of clavicle.
Insertion: Mastoid process of temporal bone & superior nuchal line.
Concentric Actions:
Unilateral: Contralateral cervical rotation & ipsilateral cervical flexion.
Bilateral: Cervical flexion, elevation of sternum & assists in forced inhalation. (Accessory breathing muscle.)
Innervation:
Motor = Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
Sensory = Ventral rami C2-C3
