Cow Elk Barks

On the last evening of archery elk season this year, my brother Tyler and I were sitting at the bottom of a small cliff listening to several bulls bugle around us. I bugled back, then used my Phelps E-Z Estrus cow elk call a few times. About 20 minutes later, a cow very quietly walked out to the edge of the cliff above us to within about 15 feet of where we were sitting. She couldn't see us, but knew something was wrong and made a noise so loud and close that we both froze in our seats! I commonly refer to this vocalization as a "bark". Often times I've heard it used as a warning to other elk that something is wrong, but I've also witnessed cows and small bulls use it when they are curious. We climbed up and brought her back to within bow range several times, but opted not to shoot.
