Far from the shores of DK Island, a gold rush arrives on Ingot Isle focused on acquiring Banandium Gems, crystalized Golden Bananas found in its mines, along with Banandium Gold. Donkey Kong travels to Ingot Isle to acquire some, only to witness the mining company VoidCo., led by Void Kong and his subordinates Grumpy Kong and Poppy Kong, steal the Banandium Gems to power their meteor ship and drive it and the island underground. Donkey Kong is also swept underground and encounters a strange living rock, who decides to join him after he rescues it. Finding a sinkhole, they delve deeper into the depths until they break into the Underground World, a vast Hollow Earth-like region inhabited by underground animal societies.
