Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with NOLS or Dr. Tom Smith. I'm simply a fan of his work. I first had this lecture linked to me from somebody on Reddit—the official NOLS post is for some reason unlisted. So I reuploaded it to make it available to as many people as possible.
In case you need a TL;DR—if you ever go into bear country, including black bears, bring bear spray. It is the thing that consistently works. Guns are okay. Bear bells are literal garbage. Travel in groups. Behavioral response is a little complicated, according to Smith there's no one size fits all. Shouting isn't always the best option. Sometimes it's better to quietly back away, depending on the bear's behavior.
