In this video I will show you how to draw a blue rose using watercolor pencils. For this tutorial I will be using Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz brand wtercolor pencils, and you will find the numbers of the pencils I am using on the side of the drawing or here:
Blues: 15, 53, 56
Black: 36
Yellow: 2
Green: 61
You can use any brand of pencils you have (but do make sure they are artist grade as that plays a huge part in how the drawing will come out) or any colors you prefer. Most importantly, you will need three shades of one color, a light, a midtone and a dark one.
I begin by drawing out the shape of the rose with my lightest pencil. Notice how I do not use a graphite pencil, that way I avoid unnecessary lines that might shine through. Then I map out my lightest areas and alternating midtone and the darkest blue I finish off each petal.
After that I use a water brush pen and activate the pigment from the lightest area into the darkest, making sure that my brush tip is clean each time I start a new petal.
And finally, I use the black to increase the contrast and make the shadows darker, at the same time adding some texture to the petals.
I will be posting the real-time version of this video on my Patreon, if you'd like, do take a look :)
