About the Collection:
In the summer of 1965 Stax Records’ brightest stars—including Rufus & Carla Thomas, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, The Mar-Keys, The Mad Lads, Wilson Pickett, and William Bell—took the stage for a two-night residency at South LA’s 5-4 Ballroom. Billed as the Stax Revue, the August 1965 shows marked many of the artists’ first Los Angeles performances and came just days before the Watts Rebellion, underscoring the deep cultural and political tensions of the time.

Stax Revue: Live in ’65! includes recordings from that electrifying engagement, plus a rare hometown showcase captured earlier that summer at Memphis’ Club Paradise, featuring David Porter, The Astors, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, and Wendy Rene. The deluxe collection features previously unreleased highlights from both shows, including Porter’s charismatic set, a searing rendition of “In the Midnight Hour” by Pickett, a fiery jam of “The Dog” from Rufus Thomas, and Booker T. & The M.G.’s high-energy “Boot-Leg,” which is​ available to stream now.
