The Widow and the Miracle of Oil!

Join us for a powerful Sunday sermon with Elder William Johnston as he shares the story the widow of a prophet (in 2 Kings 4: 1-7) facing a creditor who threatens to take her sons as slaves to pay off her husband's debts, and goes to Elisha for help.

Back in the days when being in debt could cost you everything, there were no safety nets—especially for widows. One such woman, the wife of a faithful prophet, found herself in desperate trouble. Her husband had died, leaving behind debts she couldn’t repay. A creditor was now threatening to take her two sons as slaves to settle what was owed.

With fear and urgency, the widow turned to the prophet Elisha for help. Elisha gently asked, “What do you have in your house?”

“All I have,” she replied, “is a small jar of oil.”

Elisha gave her an unusual instruction. “Go to your neighbors and borrow as many empty jars as you can—don’t just gather a few. Then go inside your house with your sons, shut the door behind you, and start pouring your oil into those jars.”

She obeyed. With each jar she poured into, the oil kept flowing—filling vessel after vessel. When the last borrowed jar was full, the oil finally stopped.

Amazed, she returned to Elisha. “Now,” he said, “go and sell the oil. Pay off your debts, and you and your sons can live on what’s left.”

This powerful moment shows how God can take something small and make it more than enough. Just like the boy’s few loaves and fish fed thousands in the hands of Jesus, the widow’s little oil became abundant when placed in God’s hands. It reminds us: a little becomes much when you place it in the Master’s hands.
