It still helps to use fabrics of the same flavor/color/ value within each block when you can. That makes it easier to design your top after you've made lots of blocks. Your quilt could emphasize all one color, the diagonal sets mentioned in earlier scrap quilt videos, all lights, all darks, alternating colors or values....there are so many strategies, so make lots of blocks so that you have lots of choices.
