Peter decided to grow a beard which soon became the nest for endangered swallows.
Initially, the "tearjerker" ending was not planned and the Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane had intended to close the episode with a series of gags typical for the show, but Alex Borstein (voices Lois) and Allison Adler persuaded him that the episode would be more effective if it were to end on a down note, eventually calling it the only Family Guy episode with "real human emotion."
