How to Rap: Do syllables matter for flow in verses?
Like does the first line has to have same amount as second?

So the question I got today and it’s basically this, when writing, do the lines in each couplet need to have the same syllable count for the flow to work and the answer is no. Your lines can be a huge range of different syllable counts and be just fine.
That being said, keeping your syllable counts close can help you maintain your flow when you’re first starting out. When you use, lets say 12 syllables in one line and then 13 in the next, it’s pretty easy to use the same or a very similar cadence to make them fit the instrumental.
But if you do something like 6 syllables in the first line and then 15 in the next, you’re going to have to adjust your flow accordingly. You might use a pause, or recite the lines slower or faster, but something has to give. So if you’re just starting out, this can be kind of overwhelming and lead into things like going way off beat.
Once you have an idea how to flow well though, there’s no rules for how many syllables to put in a line. Just make sure you have an idea of how you’re going to make it come alive on the instrumental and you’ll be fine.
Catch you next time.
