Attempted winter summit of 5,367' Mt. Madison NH, the northern most mountain in the Presidential Range. We first follow the Valley Way Trail 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of 3,500' to Madison Spring Hut. From the Hut at 4,000' we assess conditions and attempt the summit but abort due to the high winds, blowing snow and lack of visibility. This weather is not unusual in the White Mountains and is often underestimated resulting in numerous rescues and yearly deaths.
About 6 miles to our south a significant rescue operation was conducted on
Mt. Washington in 90+ mph winds, wind chill -52F
to save the disoriented, injured hiker.
