লেখক, গবেষক ও জাতীয় মুক্তি কাউন্সিলের সভাপতি বদরুদ্দীন উমর, জন্ম ১৯৩১ সালের ২০ ডিসেম্বর, বর্তমান পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বর্ধমানে।
তার বাবা আবুল হাশিম ব্রিটিশ বিরোধী আন্দোলনের অন্যতম সংগঠন ছিলেন। ১৯৫০ সালে তারা সপরিবারে ভারত থেকে বাংলাদেশে চলে আসেন।
ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে দর্শনে ১৯৫৩ সালে স্নাতক ও ১৯৫৫ সালে স্নাতকোত্তর সম্পন্নের পর ১৯৬১ সালে যুক্তরাজ্যের অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে পিপিই ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন।
পূর্ব বাংলা কমিউনিস্ট পার্টি, গণতান্ত্রিক বিপ্লবী জোট, বাংলাদেশ কৃষক ফেডারেশনসহ বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক দল ও সংগঠনের কেন্দ্রীয় নেতা ছিলেন।বদরুদ্দীন উমর ১৯৭৫ সালের সেপ্টেম্বরে পূর্ব বাংলার কমিউনিস্ট পার্টিতে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে যোগ দেন।
২০০৩ সালে তার নিজের হাতে গড়া জাতীয় মুক্তি কাউন্সিল নামে রাজনৈতিক দলটির সভাপতি ছিলেন বদরুদ্দীন উমর।


Badruddin Umar was a Bangladeshi political activist, historian, writer, intellectual and leader of the Communist Party of Bangladesh. His father, Abul Hashim was a prominent politician in the Indian subcontinent.
Umar was born on 20 December 1931 to a Bengali family of Muslim zamindars in the village of Kashiara in Burdwan district, Bengal Presidency, British India. his father Abul Hashim decided to move to East Pakistan and settled in Dhaka in 1950. Umar received his MA in philosophy from University of Dhaka and his BA Honors degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from University of Oxford. Umar began his academic career as a teacher at University of Dhaka on a temporary basis. In 1963, he joined Rajshahi University as the founder-chair of the political science department. He also founded the department of sociology at the same university,
