Voting Session: Bulgaria’s Adoption of the Euro (1 January 2026)
A formal voting session was held by the European Parliament to consider Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro as its official currency from 1 January 2026. This vote marked a key step in the final phase of Bulgaria’s long-standing process of joining the euro area.
During the session, Members of the European Parliament assessed whether Bulgaria met the required economic, legal and institutional conditions for euro adoption. The Parliament delivered a positive opinion, confirming that the country is ready to join the euro area. Although advisory in nature, this vote demonstrated strong political support at EU level.
The successful outcome of the voting session paved the way for the Council of the European Union to adopt the final legal measures necessary for Bulgaria’s entry into the euro area, including the setting of the official conversion rate between the Bulgarian lev and the euro.
As a result of this process, Bulgaria is set to replace the lev with the euro on 1 January 2026, becoming the next member of the euro area and further strengthening its economic integration within the European Union.
