"Go, Vandals, Go" | University of Idaho's Primary Fight Song

Presenting the fight song of the Vandals of Moscow, ID, here is "Go, Vandals, Go".

"Go, Vandals, Go" was written by John Morris "Morey" O'Donnell, a freshman student at UI, as well as being a pianist and being a member of the Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. In 1930, the school held another annual schoolwide song contest amongst each class, with "Go, Vandals, Go" claiming the win for the freshman class. It would later become copyrighted by the university a year later, in 1931. Before then, Idaho used a fight song nearly similar to that of Wisconsin's "On, Wisconsin".

O'Donnell's way of writing the music of the fight song helped increase and carry the spirit amongst its fans, writing it mostly entirely of whole notes and half notes, making it easier for fans to sing along to, as well as a very heavy drumbeat. It is also said to be one of America's best fight songs from a few people mentioning that the fanfare, according to Norm Javes, Jr. of The Oregonian, "lead-in that could motivate a successful infantry charge."

Today, the fight song is still being played on and off the stands by the University of Idaho's "Sound of Idaho" and "Vandal Marching Band", as well as in many of their other pep performances, rallies, and more.
