OK, so I have been an Autechre fan since around 1999-ish, and I own a considerable portion of their studio (and improv) albums/EP's, but I had never seen them live, and tbh I had never actively kept an eye on when they toured the USA (somewhat rare, but it has happened a number of times over the last 2 decades), and when I learned they were coming to the Union Transfer in Philadelphia I got pretty stoked to see them. Only to find the tickets were sold out and going for over 125$ on reseller sites about 6 weeks before the show. Very weeI would check to see if anything had changed and BAM, about a week before the show I was alerted that tickets were back on sale for only 46$ so I grabbed one quickly !!! I had heard many stories about their live shows, but really wasn't sure what to expect, except that their sets are largely improvised, are played entirely in the dark, and are LOUD AF !!! Turns out all 3 of those things are 100% TRUE !!!
Not entirely sure if this video will be allowed to remain up on the channel for long as I suppose it contains material that is owned solely by Rob and Sean, but here is what it is like to be at an Autechre show in a sort of sensory vacuum/overload state. Again, as far as I am aware, the bulk of this live material is "improvised", NO fucking clue how they generate these sonic nightmarish hellscapes, but these two dudes WERE AI loooooong before there was AI in many ways .... I only recorded 23 mins as I had forgotten my sweatshirt in the car and ended up directly under an A/C vent that was relentless all night long and I was freezing my ass off and had to stop recording to rub my hands, arms, and torso to warm all remaining 50 mins (approx) of their set ... Plus THERE ISN'T MUCH TO SEE people, mostly some ambient blue lights from their consoles/midi controllers (??) on stage and the occasional flashlight glare from security helping people who had issues from the sensory deprivation and intensity of the sound (I am assuming). It was a bizarre and disorienting experience, and one I probably don't need to repeat, but am super glad I finally checked that one off my bucket list... Next up Aphex Twin perhaps ???
