９月21日、東京世界陸上の最終日・午後セッションで男子5000m決勝が行われた。パリ五輪1500m金メダリストのコール・ホッカー（アメリカ）が12分58秒30で優勝し、世界陸上で初のタイトルを手にした。

On September 21, the men's 5000m final took place during the afternoon session of the final day at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Paris Olympics 1500m gold medalist Cole Hocker (USA) won in 12:58.30, claiming his first title at the World Championships.

Grant Fisher, also from the USA and the world record holder in the same event, was considered a sure bet for a top finish. He led the race several times but couldn't keep up in the final sprint. Hocker showed a spectacular final spurt to take the crown. Fisher finished eighth with a time of 13:00.79. Hocker had also entered the men's 1500m at this competition but was disqualified in the semifinals.
