This is probably about as good as it gets for the price point. I have no doubt it will cut thicker steel than the 1/4 inch steel plate I cut. It does not require direct contact with surface to start an arc, but does have to be close to surface. Its best to test on scrap metal in order to determine the correct setting for the thickness of metal you plan to cut. I also recommend upgrading the air hoses to a heavier grade.
