This compelling short film, "MEDSTUD SEE, MEDSTUD COME, MEDSTUD HELP," captures the essence of Medical Humanities in action. The story begins on a sunny beach in Indonesia, where a group of Indonesian medical students, fresh from their exams, witness an accident: a foreign tourist from Thailand falls and suffers a painful wrist injury. Showing immediate compassion and quick thinking, the students step up to provide the initial care. They expertly examine the wrist, determine it’s a likely sprain, and improvise a first aid plan using an emergency arm sling (made from a scarf) and ice to reduce swelling and pain, demonstrating the critical application of clinical skills outside the hospital setting. Furthermore, they go the extra mile by offering the tourists a ride to the nearest clinic, highlighting an unwavering commitment to the patient's well-being.
The core lesson in Doctor-Patient Communication unfolds inside the clinic. Although the injured tourist, Hafis, is relieved to get help, he becomes hesitant when the doctor suggests an X-ray, fearing the cost and radiation. This hesitation presents a common challenge in healthcare: overcoming patient fear and misinformation. The Doctor addresses this with patience and empathy, explaining that the X-ray is a simple, preventive step necessary to rule out a fracture and ensure no bigger problems arise later. This exchange beautifully illustrates the ethical responsibility of a physician to inform, reassure, and ultimately gain the patient's trust and informed consent.
Upon confirming the injury is only a wrist sprain, the Doctor concludes the encounter with thorough patient education. He meticulously explains the proper application of an elastic bandage and details the home care protocol: RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevation), ensuring the patient understands the steps needed for full recovery over the next seven days. The film closes by celebrating the medical students who "did the right first aid" and reiterating the film's powerful message: "A heart to help can make a difference — anywhere, anytime". Watch this video to see how compassion, communication, and competence form the bedrock of excellent medical care.
