The scrum is a defining feature of rugby union that goes a long way to deciding who wins games. However, in depth knowledge of the scrum is rare amongst both fans and pundits alike.

A few weeks ago I got to sit down with Wales & Scarlets loosened prop Kemsley Mathias to get an in depth lesson on scrummaging technique, tactics and analysis. It was a fascinating and deeply nerdy conversation during which I learned a lot!

He talked to me about scrummaging the biggest tightheads in the world such as Lions Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Tonga's Ben Tameifuna and how he uses technique and strategy to overcome his size disadvantage. He explains how he analyses scrums and gives his thoughts on scrum machines!
