A Liverpudlian born and bred, Noel Rawsthorne spent most of his musical career at Liverpool Cathedral, from being a chorister through to Director of Music and Organist. He was born one Christmas Eve 1929 and died in 2019. He studied the organ with, among others, Fernando Germani and Marcel Dupré. He succeeded Harry Goss Custard as Organist at Liverpool Cathedral in 1955 and stayed in post until 1980. As well as being an excellent player, he had a gift for arrangements and original compositions. This piece is a combination of both aspects, an elaborate and rather lush sounding prelude on "Londonderry Air", a very popular and emotive melody. Do have a read of the very interesting Wikipedia article on the origins of the tune: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londond...
