From Orange to Sleek Grey - Sanding Hardwood Floors

It is very common today to see floors with this distinct orange look. This come from using oil-based polyurethane - oil-based polyurethane is toxic, smelly, cheap and turns orange in a few years. A few things to consider with oil-based finishes - have you ever seen oil evaporate? That olive oil in the salad bowl ever evaporated? No, you had to wash it off. The engine oil leak in the driveway ever disappeared? No, oil doesn't evaporate easily and to counter that, heavy chemicals are added to forced the oil medium to flash out - hence the high VOC content, the smell, the toxicity associated with oil-based finish. Not great for homes with children, pets, allergies, or anyone really.

Instead, at Niagara Floor Refinishing, we use modern high-end waterborne finishes, including 2K commercial grade and ceramic-reinforced protective floor finishes, most with some sort of green/eco/health certification. With waterborne finishes, can expect no colour change, no toxicity, fast drying within a couple of hours and no harsh smells.

In this sanding video, we refinish an old oak strip floor. The old oil-based polyurethane has turned orange. The floor also had some heavy wax buildup and this gummed up sandpaper easily, wasting time and materials. We sanded it down to raw wood, removed all scratches, and then stained the oak floor to a dark grey colour.

Sealed with Bona's Clear Seal, then coated with Bona Mega One and finally, for the 3rd coat, protected with Bona Traffic HD, in matte sheen. Bona Traffic HD is a 2-component, commercial grade waterborne protective floor finish, known for its superior scratch resistance. This is in our Silver package.
