In today’s video, I’m sharing what a real kora lesson looks like for me. Baka is teaching me the first phrases of two traditional pieces, Tchedo and Tunga, and as always, I’m learning entirely by ear.
Tchedo is a song from the people of southern Senegal who were once known as kings and commanders. They carried themselves with pride and self confidence, and their culture was full of music, celebration, and community long before the arrival of Islam.
This is my very first lesson for both songs, so you’ll see the raw process of listening, repeating, making mistakes, and slowly finding the melody.
