*Romero’s Forgotten Play – Story*
In the grey, rain-soaked industrial towns of the 1990s, a rumor spread about a man named John Romero — not the game designer, but a reclusive and mysterious theatre director who lived far from the public eye.
He had once shown remarkable promise as a creator of dark, atmospheric stage plays. His works were said to be too heavy, too bleak, and too unsettling for the mainstream audience. His masterpiece, The Last Play,
was performed only once in a basement theatre where only a few were admitted. Witnesses claimed it wasn’t just a performance: it felt like time slowed, the lights withered into dust, and a deep shadow swept across the room.
A handful insisted that something stirred behind the scenery.
Shortly after that one performance, Romero disappeared.
No trace, no message, no body — only an abandoned theatre, its stage props dusted over like grey winter.
But one object remained: a script no one dared to finish reading.
Romero’s Forgotten Play.
People whispered that the script read like a ritual in disguise, each act descending further into darkness. Its pages seemed to char at the edges when held too long. At night a faint glow was seen
flickering through the theatre’s windows, despite its electricity being cut off for years. A low, droning hum seeped into the street — a rhythm like a doom riff from a band that had never yet been formed.
In 1997, a local doom band discovered the script.
After that, they couldn’t bring themselves to play anything else.
Their album “Romero’s Forgotten Play” emerged slow, crushing, and suffocatingly beautiful. Each track mirrored the acts of the script:
Act I: The Opening of the Curtain – where the world is illuminated one final time
Act II: The Hollowed Throne – where the protagonist loses himself to the void
Act III: The Beckoning Silence – where words decay into emptiness
Act IV: Where Shadows Deliver – where truth arrives too late
Final Act: Romero’s Return – which never reveals who—or what—returns
Listeners reported the feeling of a presence standing behind them as the album played.
Some claimed to see Romero’s name flicker in the dead neon sign of the long-closed theatre.
No one knows whether the play was real or merely a myth.
But those who listen to the album’s final minute swear it isn’t music at all —
but something waiting to be played.
• Doom II OST - Map 18,27 - Waiting For Rome...
Bobby Prince: "This song was easily named. You wouldn't believe how people in the id Software offices used to line up to watch John Romero play DOOM.
Long before the sound effects were in the game, John would provide his own, and he was good at making a lot of sound effects with his mouth. But, the reason that
people lined up to watch him play was that he put everything he had into playing the game. If it was a deathmatch, look out! John threw a constant barrage of taunts,
screams and other sounds at the opposing players. One day I noticed how quiet things got while people were gathering to watch and I decided to do some pensive music
to go with such times. Thus, the song became "Waiting For Romero To Play."
John has now left id Software to form his own company. There are better players at id, but none of them will ever have people lining up in anticipation of watching
them play as John did. I know that id Software will sorely miss the manic energy that John Romero provided".
