On Day 3 of my wandering road trip, I put in a good amount of miles on my way through Canada. The scenery continued to call for me to stop here and there, but I was also aware that I would soon be passing through some of the more populated areas on the final push toward the southern border. I like to try and time this phase of the trip so that my "sleep spots" for the night aren't right in the middle of the big cities. But while this is an important logistic concern, I did my best to push it aside when something called to me.
Borrow Pits: During this video, I explore a couple of "borrow pits." At the time, I had no idea what these were, but now I do! As it turns out, these pits are exactly what they sound like they are--they are places where material (usually gravel for road work) are "borrowed" (though I'm not sure there's any plans to bring it back). The pits naturally fill with water, and then are made into public recreation areas. A picnic table, fire ring, bench, and outhouse are placed into the area and it makes for a nice, quiet place. I like the fact that instead of just leaving a mess of the area like a scar left in the landscape, they cleaned it up, repurposed it, and kept the beauty. I really enjoyed the stops I made at these "borrow pits."
