There is a before and after 'The Favourite' in Emma Stone's career. The role of Abigail Hill, a fallen lady rising through the ranks at Queen Anne's court through scheming and manipulation, offered her a golden opportunity : to break her image, to embody an ambiguous and morally questionable woman, almost perverse. Her insidious performance adds spice to this often-forgotten historical figure, who, while she probably didn't experience the pitfalls presented in Yórgos Lánthimos' film, managed to escape her condition, cementing herself as a pillar of Anne Stuart's reign in a short time, eclipsing her cousin Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. The version presented on screen, surprisingly modern, immediately captivated me : from the very first scenes, I wanted her to win, even though every victory has its downside (a bitter realization that Abigail did not escape).
