Voormolen was a respected composer in his native Netherlands during the early 20th century. He became acquainted with Ravel in 1915 after moving to Paris to study with Roussel. I find Voormolen's music to be finely written and certainly evocative of French impressionism, though with its own individual character. The Toccatina finale recalls elements of Debussy's Jardins sous la pluie, and the Sicilienne is a gem. The whole suite is compact and generally satisfying, and while the slow movements are easy to play and fall beautifully under the fingers, the quicker ones have many awkward spots that need to be ironed out by the pianist. The composer suggests that this suite could also be played on a harpsichord.
