Colorado’s historic avalanche cycle in March 2019, which annihilated large swathes of old growth forest and buried major highways up to 20 feet deep, left even the most grizzled and slide savvy avalanche connoisseurs gob smacked. However, avalanches have been a principle concern for the mountain dwelling folks of Colorado for centuries, especially in regards to blocking transportation.
CDOT historian Lauren Cooper and longtime avalanche mitigation expert, Ray Mumford take us through the history of avalanche control and mitigation with special attention to the equipment and techniques used over the course of the 20th Century.
