Joseph Nagy, Shattuck professor of Irish studies, discusses “food culture”—the complex system of shared practices, beliefs, and worldview surrounding eating and food throughout different communities. Nagy taught the Gen Ed course “Eating Culture: Past, Present, and Future” at Harvard University last year, exploring the social implications of food around the world.
From kosher rules to table manners, from vegetarianism to diet culture and eating for aesthetics, how—and what—we eat determines many parts of our lives and lifestyles.
