The May-Stringer House in Brooksville, Florida, began as a simple four-room home built in 1855 by John L. May. After his early death, his widow Marena remained here, later marrying Confederate soldier Frank Saxon. But tragedy struck in 1869, when Marena died in childbirth. Her infant daughter survived only a short time, and her little girl, Jessie Mae, passed away at just three years old.
Years later, the property was purchased by Dr. Sheldon Stringer. He expanded the home into the towering Victorian mansion that stands today, complete with four stories, seven gables, and a doctor’s office where he treated patients suffering from yellow fever and smallpox. By the late twentieth century, the house was restored by the Hernando Historical Museum Association and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
But history isn’t the only thing that remains within its walls. The May-Stringer House is known as one of Florida’s most haunted locations. Visitors often hear the cries and giggles of Jessie Mae, still tied to the doll-filled bedroom where she once played. Her mother, Marena, is said to walk the halls, forever searching for the child she lost. In the attic lurks a darker figure known as “Mr. Nasty” or “Gary,” a hostile spirit who scratches and shouts at guests. And upstairs, the ghost of James, a World War I soldier, still lingers—drawn back to the place he once called home.
From shadowy figures to disembodied voices, from cold spots to moving objects, the May-Stringer House has become more than a museum. It is a monument not only to Brooksville’s history, but to the restless spirits who refuse to be forgotten.
