Growing up as a Maori in Christchurch, owner of My Father’s Barber Matt Brown faced constant racism from the “skinnies” or white supremacists. But the March 15 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings showed to him a different, more beautiful side of his community.

“When I heard that it happened at a sacred place, I was devastated,” Matt said, referring to the mass shooting inside the Masjid Al Noor mosque near Hagley Park that killed 51 people.
Instead of dividing, the incident rallied the community together. Students performed the haka as a tribute to the victims, and biker gangs stood guard at mosques during Friday prayers.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern symbolically wore a hijab while meeting with the Muslim community.
