For the longest time, Mumbai's pizza scene was ruled by international chains like Domino's and Pizza Hut. While they adapted their menus to suit the Indian palates by introducing fusion varieties and Indianized toppings, their flavors drifted far from the authentic taste of Italy, the birthplace of pizza. So, I set out to find the best spots for real Italian pizza in Mumbai, and my discoveries did not disappoint.
So I decided to explore some of the best spots for good Italian food in Mumbai. Amongst which I went to one of the city's oldest and most iconic pizza joints, Trattoria. Known fondly as "Tratts," this is inside the President Hotel and has beautifully retained its classic charm since its opening in 1981, serving traditional Italian flavors in a cozy, casual ambiance. Another old and nostalgic place is Pizza by the Bay known for its thin-crust pizzas and the stunning sea view. Even Cecconi’s inside Soho House Juhu delivers a similar experience with authentic Italian pizzas and breathtaking views of Juhu Beach and the Arabian Sea. The charm of dining with the sound of crashing waves paired with a perfectly baked pizza is unbeatable.
But a place to enjoy wood-fired pizza done to perfection is the Motodo Pizzeria in BKC. Named after its three essential pizza components- mozzarella, tomato, and dough, this place ensures that each slice has that irresistible smoky flavor and crisp crust. Another place that takes you along the streets of Naples is Si Nonna serving the legendary Neapolitan sourdough pizza. This 500 year old family recipe, combined with a 24-hour fermentation process, results in a light, airy, and perfectly chewy crust. But if you are feeling a bit adventurous, then you have to try the World pizzas at Nomad. They have Chicago style deep dish pizza, New York style pizza, Turkish variations and so many more. Another place to customize your pizza from base to toppings in the Ray’s Pizzeria, a cozy spot to enjoy the perfect balance of flavors and textures.
