Note: The changing of the guards and horses occurs every hour from 10 am to 3 pm. At 4 pm, the horsemen leave the box and proceed directly to the 4 O'Clock Inspection.
WHY ARE THE KING'S GUARD INSPECTED EVERY DAY  AT 4pm?  And Why is it called the Punishment Parade?
Every day at 4pm in the courtyard on the Whitehall side of Horse Guards, there's a short ceremony that ends the sentry duties of the two mounted Household Cavalry in the sentry boxes.
So, there'll be two troopers on horses and six guards on foot. They'll line up in the courtyard and some officer from Knightsbridge Barracks near Hyde Park will come and inspect them. Once he's happy, he'll let them go and that's the end of their day.
So, back in 1894, Queen Victoria showed up at Horse Guards, expecting the Household Cavalry to be all ready and proper to escort her back to Buckingham Palace. But guess what? They were either sleeping, drunk, or gambling on the job! Can you believe that? Victoria was not amused, not one bit. She was so mad that she ordered them to be inspected every day at 4 pm for the next 100 years, just to make sure they were taking their duties seriously. And get this, there had already been seven attempts on her life by then! Talk about living on the edge. Technically, the punishment period ended in 1994, but Queen Elizabeth II decided to keep the tradition going indefinitely. So, yeah, they still do the 4 pm inspection to this day.

Formed in 1969, the regiment emerged from the merger of the Royal Horse Guards ("the Blues") and the Royal Dragoons ("the Royals"), units with roots in the mid-17th century. Serving globally, it had roles in Northern Ireland, the Cold War in West Germany, the Falklands War, UN missions in Bosnia, and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was part of key defense strategies and reconnaissance missions. Notably, Prince William and Prince Harry joined as cornets in 2006.
