First out-of-town trip of the new year, and it involved chasing KiwiRail’s DC 4951, a locomotive that’s significant (at least to me) for two reasons. Firstly, she is the last of the DCs rebuilt at Hutt Workshops to still exist, and secondly, she still wears the MAXX blue livery from her days in Auckland suburban service. Only one other DC - namely 4663 - is still running in MAXX blue.
Twice a day (usually five days a week), KiwiRail runs the M52 shunt from Hamilton to the Fonterra dairy factories at Hautapu or Waitoa. In this case, we saw them going to Hautapu on the former Cambridge branch. The branch first opened in 1884, and ran for 19.27 kilometres from Ruakura (just east of Hamilton) to the town of Cambridge. Due to declining freight traffic, the branch was truncated to Hautapu in 1999, and most of the former trackbed is now used as a footpath.
