Retro Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
A Legendary Conclusion to the Modern Warfare Trilogy
Introduction
Released in November 2011, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) was one of the most anticipated games of its time. Developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, MW3 served as the epic conclusion to the Modern Warfare trilogy, picking up directly after the events of Modern Warfare 2. While the game was praised for its cinematic campaign, refined multiplayer, and high-octane action, it also faced criticism for its lack of innovation.
Campaign: The End of an Era
The single-player campaign of MW3 was an explosive and emotional ride. Continuing the story of Captain Price and his mission to stop the Russian ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov, the game took players across various global battlefields, including New York, London, Paris, and Berlin.
While the campaign was relatively short (about 5-6 hours), it delivered intense set pieces, stunning visuals (for its time), and a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. However, some players felt that MW3’s campaign was too linear and followed the same formula as its predecessors.
Multiplayer: Fast-Paced and Addictive
The multiplayer in MW3 refined the classic Call of Duty formula rather than reinventing it. Some key highlights included:
• New Strike Package System – Replacing the traditional killstreaks, MW3 introduced Assault, Support, and Specialist strike packages, allowing players to tailor their rewards based on playstyle.
• Survival Mode – A new co-op mode where players faced endless waves of enemies, adding more replayability.
• Maps & Gunplay – MW3 introduced a variety of maps with fast-paced combat, though some criticized the map design as being too chaotic compared to MW2.
Despite some balancing issues at launch, MW3’s multiplayer remained one of the most played in the series, with tight gunplay and addictive progression.
Graphics and Sound Design
For a 2011 game, MW3 looked great but didn’t push the graphical boundaries much beyond Modern Warfare 2. The game ran smoothly on most systems, maintaining 60 FPS on consoles. The sound design, however, was top-notch, with immersive weapon sounds and an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack composed by Brian Tyler.
Reception & Legacy
Upon release, MW3 was a commercial success, breaking sales records and earning positive reviews. However, some fans and critics argued that it felt too similar to previous games in the series, leading to a slight dip in enthusiasm compared to MW2.
Over a decade later, MW3 is still remembered as a solid entry in the franchise, though it is often overshadowed by its predecessor. With the Modern Warfare reboot series continuing to evolve, the original MW3 stands as a nostalgic reminder of the golden age of Call of Duty.
Final Verdict

❌ Cons:

⭐ Score: 8.5/10 – A thrilling but familiar finale to the Modern Warfare saga.
