Richard Petty wins his 7th and final NASCAR cup championship at Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario California on November 18th, 1979. Benny Parsons won with Richard finishing 5th. Richard was trailing Darrell Waltrip by 2 points going into this race and Richard beat Darrell out by 11 points after Darrell lost a lap earlier in the race, spinning out trying to avoid another spinning car. This was the first time any NASCAR driver won 7 championships, (Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson are the second two drivers do this) it was also the first time there was a change in the points lead in the final race.
