Some of the most spectacular geological vistas in the world are just west of Cody, Wyoming and east of Yellowstone National Park. Plenty of people drive this area each summer, but few get the chance to read the pages of Earth’s 4.6 billion year history that are exposed in the canyon. In this video, we’ll explore the geothermal springs at Colter’s Hell, learn about the massively thick accumulations of 500-300 million year old carbonates, lay hands on the Great Unconformity, with its 1.5 BILLION year gap between the Archean basement and Cambrian River deposits, and explore a beautifully exposed fault system that facilitated uplift of the Rattlesnake Mountains anticline beginning 75 million years ago in the Cretaceous!
