Every 16 hours, the brightness of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS changes consistently, resembling a heartbeat. But what exactly is happening remains unclear.
At present, most astronomers are confident that 3I/ATLAS is a comet—although a very unusual one. Studies show that it arrived from another part of our galaxy and is now heading away from the Solar System, where 3I/ATLAS was first discovered on July 1 of this year. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb believes that there is still not enough data to say with certainty what 3I/ATLAS actually is. For example, he has found that the object’s brightness fluctuates every 16 hours—rising and falling by tens of percent.
