zymogens are pancreatic enzymes which are released in their inactive form. They are synthesized in their inactive form to avoid the digestion of cells which are producing them. zymogens need to be activated by their proteolytic cleavage at specific protein parts which renders them inactive. Their activation is highly regulated for avoiding medical conditions as they are digestive enzymes and can digest the tissues. one of such conditions is acute pancreatitis, which is caused by the premature activation of zymogens [trypsin (trypsinogen), chymotrpsin etc.]
